Agile Software avoids the use of external documentation other than the source code itself. The term Agile UML is therefore rarely encountered as one represents an ongoing approach to architecture modeling, while the other assumes pre-coding activity.

The Agile Software development community has turned its back on the more traditional methods of software development. What is needed is an 'agile uml' approach which takes the best of Agile methods, while retaining as many as possible of the benefits of UML. Many Agile software teams have abandoned UML tools altogether; this is unfortunate since there are great benefits to be had when a suitable class diagram reverse engineering tool is used which is sympathetic to Agile software and in particular Agile UML.
